Custom Hardening & Tempering of C1075 Annealed Springwelds
Nowhere is it more important for steel to be properly hardened and tempered than in military applications, which demand the most from their equipment. Military parts and components must function-often in life and death situations–with no questions asked. At Bristol Heat Treat, we fully support the men and women in the U.S. military and are honored when they turn to us for help.
Hardening and tempering of high carbon steel basically consists of four steps, which combined will provide proper durability without excessive brittleness. First, carbon steel receives intense heat until it turns red, particularly in the area where it is to be hardened. Following rapid cooling in water, the piece is hard, but brittle. Tempering begins next, which involves reheating that portion of the steel that previously received the most intense heat until it turns the requisite shade of blue, after which it is allowed to air cool.
At Bristol Heat Treat, we were asked by a military customer to harden and temper springwelds. We took C1075 annealed, high carbon, and cold rolled spring steel and treated it in our continuous belt furnace, which is ideal for this kind of work because of its high speed and variable heating zones for such operations as pre-heating, firing, and rapid cooling. The 1” to 2” long, 1” to 2” wide, and 1” to 2” high springwelds were hardened and tempered to 15N 82.5-84.5, all of which was confirmed by Rockwell hardness testing and visual inspections to verify minimal distortion. Even though we were held to demanding military specifications, we were able to harden and temper between 5,000 and 10,000 springwelds in only three to five days for delivery worldwide.
